Grid & Drawing
Once the muslin is prepped, the reference image is ready to be transferred onto the surface.
The backdrop design typically combines digital tools like Photoshop and hand-rendering in Procreate.
A standard 4x8 grid with 1-inch squares is overlaid on the printed reference image, which scales up to 5-foot grid squares on the full-size backdrop. Perspective lines are carefully factored in to create spatial depth, particularly for intricate architectural details.
A chalk line is used to snap straight guidelines, and the design is then hand-drawn in charcoal, using the grid as a guide. Vine charcoal sticks are ideal because they are easily visible from a distance and can be quickly wiped away with water if adjustments are needed. Maintaining accuracy at this stage is essential, as it ensures the final painting closely matches the reference.
